Product Idea? Just Start - but how?

Writer: Brian SchoolcraftBrian Schoolcraft

We’ve all been there - knowing you’ve got a great idea for a new product, business, etc., thinking about it for days or months or weeks, but nothing happens. I’m not the first to say it, and I won’t be the last, but most of the time, you need to stop thinking and just start.

That sounds easy, but if it really was, we'd all be doing it. In my experience, your starting point probably isn't what you think it is. It’s easy to think that “starting” means figuring out that scary detail you’re worried about because you’ve never done it before.

I’ve fallen into this trap many times, and almost all of those ideas have died in my mind, never taking a single step towards reality.

If that’s not what “starting” looks like, what is? I think it’s a lot closer to this:

Talk to someone

Talk to a potential customer. Talk to a like-minded person in the same business space. Heck, talk to your mom, just get it out of your head!

When I’ve listened to this advice, things have happened. Ideas have room to breathe, and those scary details? Sometimes they’re real, but often they aren’t once you refine your idea. And a great way to refine your idea is by sharing it with someone.

Go find someone to talk to!
